Life is too short: Robert Mugabe sleeps off during AU Summit (Photo)

Life is too short: Robert Mugabe sleeps off during AU Summit (Photo)
The job of being  a national leader must be so tiring.
Evidence to this comes from photos from the 50th African Union Summit which kicked off in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on May 26.
A group of leaders are seen catching some z’s, with Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe leading the pack.

Nollywood star Chidi Mokeme seems to be having so much fun at the 7star Burj al Arab Jumeirah hotel in Dubai.
Dressed in a light blue ‘My Oga at the Top’ T-shirt and atop a pair of blue jeans, Mr. GQ, as the actor is fondly called, recently posted a series of photos showing off his 7star experience in the Dubai hotel.
Whether on business or pleasure, what’s a cozy hotel experience without a woman to share it with? (by woman, I mean Mrs Chinwe Mokeme oh…lol)

Meet Man Who Killed A Baby Over A Video Game

Meet Man Who Killed A Baby Over A Video Game
Koman Willis, the man who shot and killed 6-month old Jonylah Watkins in March has been charged with first degree murder and aggravated battery.
On Monday, it was revealed that Koman Willis, from the South Side of Chicago, shot the baby because Jonylah’s father, Jonathan Watkins, allegedly burglarized Willis’ mother’s home and stole a PlayStation video game device.
Watkins will most likely not be charged with the alleged robbery, however. During the shooting on March 11, Watkins suffered three bullet wounds. He was sitting in a minivan with Jonylah in his lap when the shots were fired from behind.

I Was Inspired by Gospel Songs – M.I.

Referred to as African Rapper No. 1, M.I. meaning Mr. Incredible, rose to prominence in 2006, when his song “Crowd Mentality” became popular in his home town, Jos. He released his widely acclaimed debut album, “Talk About It” in December 2008 and has won several awards including MTV Africa Music Awards in 2009 and City People Artiste of the Year 2012. He was nominated for BET 2010 Awards for the Best International Act Category. M.I. is UN Ambassador on Drugs and Crime.

Why did you decide to take up the offer and be part of the judges for X-Factor West Africa?

First of all, X-Factor is the best talent-hunt show in West Africa and I am glad to be part of it. Secondly, you don’t say ‘No’ to Glo. (laughs) When Glo asks you to do something, you can’t say ‘No’. It is not that I can’t say ‘No’ or that I am afraid to say ‘No’, but because they always make an offer that you are happy about. You are happy to be part of the family. which is what X-Factor is all about. It is a great platform for me to be on. Lastly, I am glad to be here helping a new generation of talents, which is what X-Factor is all about.

What exactly are you looking for in a contestant?

That X-Factor; nobody knows it. That is why it is called X.  You remember in Mathematics, they tell you to find ‘X’. You don’t know what X is until you find X. So, we are solving ‘Mathematics’ here; we are looking for X. When we find it, we will know what it is. For some people, it is their stage presence, their voice, carriage, the way they carry themselves, the way they present themselves. Whatever it is, we are look for the X-Factor. The competition is generally into music, singing and rapping. So far in the auditioning, we have a large number who have made it through. They have done a good job.

What are the measures that have been put in place to ensure that the process will not be rigged?

At the end of the day, the fans choose. If they choose a contestant because the person can smile or because the person can sing, so be it. Our powers as judges cease somewhere. After that, it is up to the fans. Until then, we will do our best to make sure we select only the best contestants to stand so that when it gets to that stage everybody has a fair chance to stand. The truth about it is that when you get to the finals and you have a big family and you come from a state where they love TV and they love music, you will have a good chance.

What have you been up to lately?

I have a new song called “Chairman”. We have been working on it for some time now; it will be released in June, after the X-Factor (contest). And, I still have many more things to come.

What were your early musical influences?

I grew up in the church. My dad is pastor. My mum can sing and that background helped me to love music. While I was growing up, I listened to lots of gospel songs from Panam Percy Paul, amongst others. All these people inspired me to be what I could be. Funny enough, you were there – at one of my first shows. That was my first performance in Lagos. It was quite a big step for me.

So from a gospel music background, you moved to secular music?

To me, it is all the same. How you live your life is different from what you do at your leisure. So, I am a musician. Sometimes, I will sing about God. At other times, I will sing about even my girl friend. If you listen to my music, you will notice that there is a wall. I don’t sing about everything. I sing about things that affect my life so, even if I sing a love song, it is from a positive point of view. I am a musician and a musician is different from a worship leader. A worship leader can go on to make commercial music; that is what we call gospel music.

Do you write your songs?

Yes, I write my songs but I get a lot of help. For instance, Ice Prince wrote “Africa Rapper Number One”. He came up with that chorus. Then, Flavour came and added his part. I always like to work with people. It helps to bring the best in you.

Seriki, Wise, Kayefi, Snow leave 9ice’s Alapomeji Records

Kayefi, Seriki, Wise, Snow
9ice‘s label Alapomeji Records has lost four of its artistes: Seriki, Wise, Kayefi, Snow.
A rep for Seriki confirms this, saying the rapper has parted ways with 9ice. Other sources tell us soul singer Kayefi and Pop singers Snow, Wise have also thrown in the towel.
It’s true, they’ve ended their time with Alapomeji, they left recently‘, Seriki’s rep told NET over the telephone.
All four artistes spent about four years under Alapomeji Records but failed to break through as solo artistes. This is rumoured to be the reason behind the mass departure.
It’s been four years, no album, just a few singles and low budget videos for them, 9ice kept promising them big things but nothing materialized. He never had time for them, only his career‘, one insider told NET.
Other sources tell us that the artistes don’t believe 9ice is in the capacity to handle their career anymore since he has allegedly not set up any proper management or admin system at the label. Last year, 9ice also parted ways with his longtime manager and friend Fajana Dehinde.
Since 2009, 9ice has released three solo albums ‘Tradition‘ and the 2012 double effort ‘Bashorun Gaa‘ and ‘Versus‘. Late last year, he promised he would be releasing in 2013, another double album ‘CNN‘ and ‘GRA‘ and finally an ‘Alapomeji All Star‘ album but in March 2013, he shelved the projects and released a new album ‘Certificate Reloaded‘.
Alapomeji Records was setup in 2008 after he left EDGE Records (where he released his debut album ‘Certificate‘). Alapomeji released his second album, the successful ‘Gongo Aso’.
Other Artistes who have left the label include Ajayi Brothers and Zara. The label is now left with 9ice and his cousin Allan B who signed in 2010.
9ice could not be reached for details as his phones were switched off.

Tiwa Savage unveils official album art for ‘Once Upon a Time’

Tiwa Savage – Once Upon a Time album cover. Photo: Instagram
The R&B singer who will be releasing her highly anticipated debut album ‘Once Upon a Time‘ on Jun 14, 2013 has unveiled the official album artwork.
The artwork was unveiled by her manager-fiancé Tunji ‘T-Billz’ Balogun on Instagram last night, May 28, 2013.
The art design depicts Tiwa Savage in three different postures with the one in the middle overshadowing the others. This correlates with Tiwa’s description of the album, expressing that the songs reflect the singer’s different sides.
Tiwa held an exclusive album listening session last weekend, revealing the album’s tracklist and select songs.
She also disclosed she initially thought of naming the album ‘Based on a True Story’ but found out a US artiste had that album name already. (Def Jam recording artistes 2Chainz named his 2012 solo debut Based on a T.R.U. Story‘)

Celebrating Nigeria on Democracy Day! Let Us Bask in the Richness of Nigerian Food

I’ll like to start by writing this warning. NIGERIAN FOODIE PEEVE ALERT! Readers Beware. I am Nigerian, born and bred. I grew up with great cooks, and I grew up eating Nigerian food all my life. Nigerian food is incredibly rich and robust and it is quite sad, that we are not proud of our food the way Indians, Mexicans, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Spanish, French, Caribbean and Italians are.
Beyond the shores of Nigeria, no one knows about our food except us, and people who have come in direct contact with us through friendship and marriage. In major cities and smaller towns all over the world, you will find the food of some (if not all) of the people I just listed. Nigerians are one of the most migratory people in the world, and our food doesn’t speak for our immense presence globally.
Quite a number of people lose their food identity when they live abroad, and some are too quick to adopt the food of the area they live, in my opinion. I understand that Nigerian food is not readily available in some areas, but has anyone wondered how come the food of lets say the Indians and Chinese are ? They are proud of their food, they carry it everywhere they go, they set up shops in their locales, they set up takeaways. Is that more of a business thing than a cultural thing? Maybe a mixture of both, I’m not sure. Even in the remote areas of some parts of the world, you will find at least one Chinese takeaway.
I’ve had a few friends over for dinner who tell me, “Dunni, you’ve made my year. I haven’t had Egusi soup in ages.” Shockingly, some of them live in London, where you can find everything plus the local wooden spoon. I also get pained when my fellow Nigerians condemn our food during healthy eating debates. Nigerian food is fattening, its all carbs, it is too oily, it is this, and that. Personally I disagree. Modify your cooking style, control your portion sizes, cut down on the size of meat served per meal, eat more vegetables, cut down on the oil, above all exercise. You’ve been average sized almost all your life, then you get an office job, you develop a sedentary lifestyle, years after Nigerian food suddenly becomes “fattening”.  You’ve been average sized almost all your life and in a few years of relocating abroad you gain weight and suddenly start pointing fingers at Nigerian food. I’m no nutrition expert, but I’ll loudly and proudly defend Nigerian food any day. It is not the food per se, it is lifestyle changes that may need to be made to make your body as efficient as it used to be. Hey, I may be wrong. Hands up, don’t shoot me.
We probably all grew up with spicy food, but the palate of some has evolved to no longer tolerate spicy food. Some children born to Nigerian parents may not even know that much about Nigerian food or how to prepare it (true stories). I was cooking Ogbono soup at a family members house one day and his 12 year old daughter (100% Nigerian parentage) asked me “Aunty what is that?” I was shocked to say the least. I’m not sure this will apply to Indian or Chinese children living abroad. I have seen an Indian colleague eating a curry at his desk. As unpleasant as the odour was in an air conditioned room for that matter, he didn’t get up from his desk till he was done, and no one complained. You won’t find many  Nigerians doing that. They would rather take the food down to the cafeteria (personal observation) or eat a less “offensive” meal life Jollof rice or rice and stew at their desk. Being the foodie that I am, I can unashamedly say, I’ve taken Yam and Egusi (filled with iru, crayfish, stockfish, dried fish) to work and eaten it at my desk. My colleagues, turned up their noses and kept commenting about the aroma but as no one dared ask me to leave, I sat at my desk and finished my lunch. I have eaten Aya Mase (Green bell pepper stew with Iru and Crayfish) with rice at work before, Beans full of crayfish and dried fish and fried plantain. Surprisingly, I have been berated by some Nigerian colleagues, and some have even told me, I must be very bold, weren’t my colleagues complaining? I told them – not to my hearing. I draw the line at Eba, Semo, Okra and Ewedu though, as I would have to eat with my hands and that is not professional.
Americans are hung up on Chinese food. The British love Indian food.I know their historical ties are responsible, but Nigerians have been living abroad for a long time too. Maybe if people who emigrated before me embraced their Nigerian food, and took it global, who knows, we probably would have Nigerian takeaways on every corner, (just as you probably have Nigerians living or working on every corner) not just in select restaurants or food joints. Funny thing is, in a short while, my colleagues stopped noticing and they even took an interest in my packed lunch and asked me many questions about Nigerian food. I have recently won my boss over with Chin- Chin. She absolutely loves it and I don’t know, but it just may have improved our relationship.
I will be discussing with the Events Department to organise an International Food day, just so I can sneakily introduce my 3000 strong staff members to Nigerian food and food from other parts of the world of course. There is a noticeable Nigerian presence at my place of work, so I hope I will get some support and I implore your Bella Naija readers to do the same if you can.
We are known for some not so nice things, let us also be known for our great food. What is the point behind this post? With the teeming population of Nigerians abroad, I think we should have takeaways by now, we should have introduced the people of our adopted countries to our food. We are doing well professionally all over the world, raising the bar, and making our people proud. Most of us grew up with amazing cooking heroines from 2nd and 3rd generations, family recipes etc. So when you hear celebrity chefs talk about things they learnt from their mothers, aunties, grandmothers I can relate and so can many of us. Atoke’s post about grandparentreceived a lot of comments regarding food and cooking. We have a lot to offer food wise. A lot. Our food is no less great than the Indians, Chinese, or even the Great French food. It is all about packaging and presentation.
You watch cooking channels, and you have shows dedicated to all the food from the cultures I listed above. The only African feature I have seen is Moroccan, and their food tends towards Middle Eastern cuisine, so I still say African food is still not being represented, and maybe just maybe, we let it happen. One of the celebrity chefs in England Reza Mahammed is of Indian origin. He presents a show on Food Network called Spice Price of India. He is such a funny character. I tuned into Food Network one evening and I saw another show of his “Rezza’s African Kitchen”. The tag line of of the show is “Join Rezza to learn the secrets of the African Kitchen”. I was shocked, then it slowly turned to irritation and then annoyance. Yes it is great that African food gets some airtime, but presented by a chef of Indian origin, traveling through Africa and showing the world our food? SERIOUSLY! The execs couldn’t find an African chef? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some African Activist, but I just felt bad. I later shrugged it off and said, “really Dunni what did you expect?” Who knows Africans and food? So I’m back to the issue of we have a massive presence, but food wise, we are still puns in the global food industry. I really can’t blame The Food Network. They are in the business of television. I was happy to watch the pilot of Afropolitan. Hopefully, we have started our journey.
Don’t get me wrong, I also cook foreign dishes. On my blog, I have written about recipes of foreign origin but with a Nigerian twist and I intend to explore more. The world is global, and through our experience of food, it must reflect it. At the same time, lets also carry the identity of our food into foreign dishes that we prepare. I was in Lagos and Abuja last year, and I was quite pleased to see a new crop of fancy restaurants. The kind of swanky places you’ll find in New York, Paris and London. My joy quickly turned to annoyance when I noticed that a large portion of their menu was of foreign origin. I kept asking my friends, what is going on? Have I been away for too long? I am in a restaurant in Lagos, I shouldn’t have to be perplexed about the menu. I am in my country, my food haven. I was told, Ah, Dunni, “na so we see am o”. “Nigerian food has been relegated to Buka’s and Mama put, or a casual mention on the menu list”. “Dignified big boys and girls eat A la carte”. “Our food is not tush oh”. “How do you expect MD so so to be eating Egusi or Efo riro in public”? It is great we are also becoming connoisseurs of foreign food, but to relegate our own food to the background on the journey to getting there? Someone please explain to me why?
I have always wanted to do something with Nigerian food outside the kitchen of my home, and starting my blog Dooney’s Kitchen, I hope is the beginning of that journey. I must say, I am very pleased with the responses I have gotten from you Bella Naija readers on my BN Cuisine posts and it has given me the boost I needed to take this head on. So as I have gotten us talking about Nigerian food on one of the most popular media exports from Nigeria, I hope I will also challenge you to take Nigerian food beyond your homes and represent. Who will be joining me? I you want to talk about food that you love, or you love preparing and you have recipes you’ll like to get out there, and talk about. Bella Naija has a tight schedule so, I humbly submit myself as the medium to let us do so. We have the numbers, lets get talking.
Watch out world, Nigerian cooking shows on Food Network with globally sold recipe books will be coming to you soon.

Omotola arrives in Lagos - May 2013 - BellaNaija009
Over the weekend, Nigerian actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde arrived at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos after her US trip.
If you recall, the star was honored at the 2013 TIME 100 Gala in New York in April and was spotted in May at the EIF Revlon Run/Walk For Women and the Maxim Hot 100 Party, both in California.
The movie star who was with her hubby Captain Mathew Ekeinde at the airport, was dressed in a simple-yet-chic outfit. Omotola who tried to go incognito, hiding her smouldering eyes under dark Pradashades, rocked a blue-and-black zig-zag striped blouse, black pants, ivory flats with diamond detailing, a silver wrist watch and an eye catching burgundy Louis Vuitton bag.
Her arrival look was completed with diamond stud earrings, red lipstick and a youthful ponytail.

Sharp Sharp David Beckham moves into the restaurant business with Gordon Ramsay

Sharp Sharp David Beckham moves into the restaurant business with Gordon Ramsay
Recently retired David Beckham has moved on already and has made plans with 3star Michelin Chef Gordon Ramsay to open a restaurant in Las Vegas together.
The 38-year-old sportsman and TV chef have reportedly joined forces with business tycoon Steve Wynn to open an eaterie in his luxury hotel down the city’s Strip.
Gordon already has three joints in the hot spot – a BurGR joint at Planet Hollywood, a steak house at Paris and a Pub & Grill at Caesars Palace - but Steve believes David’s star touch will help generate popularity for the new sports bar and grill.
David is already set to open the Union Street Cafe with Gordon near London’s Borough Market this September and revealed how excited he is about the venture last year.
He gushed: ‘We’ve got something in the pipeline. We are obviously good friends and we are excited about a project that could happen pretty soon. It will be a business thing but owning a restaurant is going to be fun as well.’
Congrats Mr Beckham.

#BBATheChase: Early exit awaits?#BBATheChase: Early exit awaits?

#BBACHASE : Early exit awaits?
On Sunday the 2nd of June, two housemates will pack their luggage and bid their fellow housemates and indeed the whole of Africa farewell but not to worry Nigeria, your darling Beverley and Melvin will see this one through and through. Five housemates from both the Ruby and Diamond are up for possible eviction.
From the Diamond house; Ethiopia’s Betty,Kenya’s Huddah and Denzel representing Uganda may suffer an early exit while from the Ruby house, Ghana’s Selly and Malawi’s Natasha may suffer a similar fate. Worthy of note is the fact that only Natasha and Betty are in the know of a possible eviction on Sunday so it is expected that they turn up their charms and strategies to get your votes in their favour. The three other #ChasersSellyHuddah and Denzel will get  the shock of their lives when reality finally sets in on Sunday.
My bet on an early reunion with their family and friends is on Ethiopia’s Betty and Ghana’s Selly but it’s all on you Africa, who are you sending home on Sunday?
